Berries – Super Foods to the Rescue!

by Michele on November 3, 2012

When it comes to consuming a healthy diet, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains often make the list. However, fruits are often frowned upon due to their high sugar content. While this is true for many types of fruit, when eaten along with a balanced diet, berries are super foods that can aid in weight loss, satiety, and adequate vitamin consumption. Berries are also thought to protect individuals from free radicals, which are considered by many to contribute to cancer and other forms of chronic illness. The following berries are some of the most health-rewarding and offer the highest levels of nutrients

Acai Berry

A dark purple variety, the Acai berry is a powerhouse of antioxidants. Experts believe that this berry can fight against the ill effects of free radicals, may offer cardio-protective benefits and may play a role in blood clot prevention. Acai berries are also believed to slow blood circulation, which slows the aging process.

Blueberry

Characteristic of it’s name, the blueberry may play an active role in preventing consumers from feeling “blue.” Containing vitamins and nutrients like manganese and Vitamins A, B, and C, blueberries are known to ward off diseases and boost energy. Not to mention, these berries direct “B rays” toward unwanted free radicals.

Cranberry

Known as a common Thanksgiving dinner component, cranberries can help prevent bacterial attachments in the urinary tract and stomach. They can also boost heart health and provide high levels of Vitamin C and antioxidants to consumers. Similar to other berries, cranberries also play a vital role in destroying free radicals.

Goji Berry

This Tibetan berry plays a vital role in protecting eyesight, primarily via protection of the retina. Also known for improving kidney and liver function, Goji berries are known for boosting the immune system and combating the effects of aging. Theorized to prevent fatigue, Goji berries are a powerhouse of amino acids, vitamins and nutrients.

Despite their health benefits, many people avoid healthy food because of flavor, lack of flavor, or side effects such as bloating, etc.  Berries, though, are delicious, cause no undesirable side effects and add a gorgeous punch of color to even the most drab bowl of cereal. Nothing in the world of fruit offers a better package of flavor, visual appeal and nutritional / health benefits.
